Girls Education Project

Social Action Campaign: Activate domestic audiences to
engage in a movement to reduce barriers to education for girls
    in developing countries

Clients and Partners: The Documentary Group and Oscar-
nominated director Richard Robbins, Paul Allen’s Vulcan
    Productions

The Documentary Group is compromised of a group of filmmakers and journalists
founded by the core members of PJ Productions, the late Peter Jennings’ production
company, and produces documentaries for television and both the feature film and
educational markets.  Vulcan Productions is an independent film production company
founded by Paul Allen, cofounder of Microsoft, which finances and produces feature
films, documentary projects and other innovative programming.  The Documentary
Group has partnered with Vulcan on the Girls’ Education Project, a compelling
documentary that illuminates a groundbreaking method of tackling global poverty:
the education of young girls.  For this project, The Documentary Group has employed
the research support of former national economic advisor and current director of the
Center for Universal Education at the Council on Foreign Relations, Gene Sperling,
and the assistance of organizations such as UNICEF and Save the Children.

The Girls’ Education Project documentary, which will be distributed through both
traditional and grassroots outlets, hopes not only to create awareness of the
importance of girls’ education, but also offer an effective solution to those who are
uncertain of how to solve the problem of global poverty.  Featuring a series of
vignettes in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, this documentary aims to
illuminate the unique struggles that girls in many developing nations face in gaining
access to and completing primary and secondary schooling.  The film will detail how
education will improve women’s long-term productivity and well-being, as well as
    help place their children—the world’s future—on a similarly positive path.  Cause &
Affect delivered the strategic plan for a social action campaign in January 2009
which, in conjunction with the release of this film, will raise awareness on this issue in
the United States and encourage citizens to affect change abroad.
